About Us
Leukaemia Project Foundation (LPF) is a non-profit, non-governmental Organisation registered in Ghana in 2009, dedicated to the fight against leukemia and other blood-related disorder. LPF was started by two Professors of Hematology at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and a leukemia survivor, they considered the high cost of bone marrow transplant abroad and the risk factors prevalent in this illness with the growing number of patients in Ghana and decided to build a bone marrow transplant unit in Ghana hence LPF was borne.
LPF’s mission is to help victims who are suffering from these illnesses in Ghana based on the rising statistics of this malignant blood disorder. The present study reviews states that over 3659 cancer deaths occurred at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with Leukaemia gaining prominence in the death toll in over 10 years (Postgraduate Medical Journal of Ghana.) This is due to a lack of adequate facilities to handle these Patients. Based on this LPF’s primary objective is to build an ultra-modern facility and devote to the training of doctors in this specialised field of medicine and equipping this facility to make available adequate health care to help patients in Ghana and West Africa.
With this objective Leukaemia Project Foundation identified Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) as the best location for this structure as it is the premier tertiary healthcare facility in Ghana and the third biggest referral centre in Africa with its expertise and technical facilities which is best suited for the project.
Leukaemia Project Foundation has a governance structure which consists of the Advisory Board under the chairmanship of His Royal Majesty Chief Dr Alhassan Andani, the Executive Council, and the Management Board
Leukaemia Project Foundation under the chairmanship of His Royal Majesty Chief Dr Alhassan Andani and the President Mr Gerard Boakye entered discussion with Chief Executive Officer Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah and the management of Korle Bu to achieve our vision.
The CEO and Management of Korle Teaching Hospital welcomed the idea as laudable and worked tirelessly to secure a working relationship with the Leukaemia Project Foundation towards achieving this great objective to be known as the Centre for Haematology and Clinical Genetics.
This working relationship bore fruit in an MOU signed between the KBTH and LPF to facilitate the development of the Centre on Monday 6th September 2021.
We use this medium to call on well-meaning persons and corporate institutions to rally around to support this great lifesaving Project for the victims of this blood cancer.
